Web Page Writing

  1. How can I line up a graphic next to text? What is the best way to do that?
    A. You need to use a table to do this. If you want your graphic and text NEXT to each other, you should create a table with one row and two cells. You can then format the tablet: centering, borders, background color, width and more.

  2. I want to create a bulleted list to use in a web page. Is there an easy way to do this?
    A. A bulleted list is also called an "unordered list". The tags used are the following:
    <UL>This tag opens the list
<LI>Each item in the list will have this tag in front of it
    </UL>This tag closes the list

  3. I want to have a counter on my site so I know how many visitors have been there. Where can get one?
    A. The most accurate counter is one that your web site provider can give you. Other than that, there are many out there on the web that are free for people to use on their pages. Here are just two of those free services: SuperStats and Web Tracker. Read the fine print as you may be required to have advertising on your site in exchange for the counter!

  4. We want a guest book on our site so that visitors can leave comments. Are there free ones out there or am I going to have to learn programming to do this?
    A. There are many free guest book sites on the web. Be careful if you put one up as you need to check it constantly and delete information that might not be appropriate. Again, check the fine print as you may be required to have unwanted advertising in exchange for the Guest Book! HomePageTools and 1-2-3 WebTools have many free items for your web site.

  5. I am having a difficult time finding suitable background graphics for my school web site. Any ideas to help me?
    A. Check out Backgrounds for Educators and Others. They have links to many sites.

  6. Do you know of any articles to help us with good website design? We need some ideas of what works and what doesn't, what to look out for and things to avoid.
    A. A very good article is by Dan Gilmore and is entitled Some Timely Guidelines for Web Design. It is concise and full of great tips for the novice and old-timer alike.

  7. Why do so many web designers avoid using frames on their sites?.
    A. For several reasons:
    • If you use frames many engines will not get to your site's content, unless you have created a "noframes" section with content and links to the pages in your site. The noframes area should be in every file that describes and initiates your framed page.
    • People arrive at a page that is part of a framed page - the issue is that they do not see the page as you designed it. Also, they may not have the ability to navigate out of it to the rest of your site. You would need to use javascript to force the page to the top of the window or have navigational aids on each page in a frame to enable you to get back to the framed site.
    • Frames are not accessible for visually disabled "surfers" using software that reads the page to them.

  8. I am looking for a software program that will capture web pages. I want  to download all or parts of a web site and demonstrate these pages during a presentation. I've used WebWacker 2000, and have had some problems with the software. It appears to have crashed and I lost all the web page files I was saving. Any suggestions as to alternative programs??
    A. How about a free one? I hear that SiteSnagger does a very good job of capturing the sites. You can get it from PC Magazine. It is for Windows 95/98/NT.
